Are you ready to return to high school? Within the walls of St. Eustace Catholic School, Tom must hide that he is gay. Deviating from heterosexuality, Tom is cast out as his friends Virgil and April attempt to hide sins of their own. In a bout of gay porn, love, sex, and isolation, the friends must ask themselves what it means to truly be alone. Written by youth, for youth, and about youth, You Are Not Alone strives to genuinely portray what it means to be gay in generation Z, during an age in which adolescence is so often romanticized and misrepresented.
You Are Not Alone was originally produced for the Paprika Festival, a ground breaking youth-led performing arts festival based in Toronto. Our cast and crew is comprised of current students and recent graduates of Rosedale Heights School of the Arts, a multidisciplinary arts school located in the heart of Toronto. As hopelessly broke and thoroughly busy teenagers, we exploited many unique rehearsal spaces ranging from bedrooms, to parking lots. In an intensive two month period, our playwright and cast collectively crafted You Are Not Alone, completing its first draft one week before the show’s premiere.
Kenneth Collins, playwright, cast member, and director of You Are Not Alone was featured in Seven Siblings Theatre’s 2014 production of Philip Ridley’s Mercury Fur. The remainder of our company are fresh faces in the Toronto Theatre scene, eager to share their new and bold perspectives.
You Are Not Alone is a quirky, face-paced dramedy bound to resonate with the teenager in us all. Whether you are a newcomer or a theatre aficionado, come out and support the emerging voices in the Toronto Theatre community!
