Toronto, Ontario - The Hum. Listen, can you hear it? The GzAp Collective is a family affair consisting of father, musician and sound designer John Gzowski (Shaw and Stratford Festivals, Tarragon Theatre), mother, dancer and choreographer Julia Aplin (Dancemakers, The Theatre Centre, Dusk Dances) and their 10 year-old daughter Jenny Aplin, who is herself a visual artist. Partnering with Theatre Gargantua and its award-winning SideStream Cycle, they have devised The Hum, a multi-disciplinary piece that combines their varying skillsets to bring Jenny's artwork alive and take audiences on a voyage from their living room couch to the galaxy's stars. The Hum is a limited engagement. Only 4 performances at Theatre Passe Muraille Mainspace from August 8-16 as part of the SummerWorks Performance Festival.
Inspired by our human connection to the natural world as depicted in Jenny's original paintings, the Gzowski-Aplin Family tell their story of connections to family, the environment and life through music, dance and drawing. It is the story of tuning in to the connection itself; or in the words of a child, tuning into the hum of the Earth. The GzAp Collective partners with Theatre Gargantua to bring the perspective of a child to the fore and remind us of the valuable insights of youth.
Theatre Gargantua is a multi-Dora awarding winning ensemble producing ground-breaking, multidisciplinary work. They were the co-producers of last year's Summer Works Performance Festival NOW Audience Choice Award winner Trace. This is their third SideStream Cycle Project. Through the SideStream Cycle, Theatre Gargantua commits to the bold exploration of new creative techniques by supporting associate artists whose work challenges form and the traditional notion of theatre.
