How can we reach across borders to deal with loss?
Join us for the Canadian premiere of Upon the Fragile Shore, a play by 2012 Obie-Award winner for Lifetime Achievement, Caridad Svich, which references a number of recent manmade and environmental tragedies. CorpOLuz Theatre embodies her words through a hybrid theatrical language that includes storytelling traditions, butoh and Afro-Diasporic inspired movement.
Nine interwoven tales. Four actors. Sixteen characters. Three mythical beings. A Seer, two mothers, a father, a militant son, a daughter, a potential boyfriend, a brother, a partner, a sister, a refugee, a sole survivor, a man going blind, a storyteller, an insignificant person and a leopard. Only two blood ties. But all of them related. All standing upon one fragile shore.
Across eight cities, in five global regions: Damascus (Syria), Caracas (Venezuela), Jos (Nigeria), Dahkla refugee camp (Western Sahara) Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Boston, Aurora (Colorado) and Port Sulphur (Louisiana). They stand vulnerably upon this shore, at the edge of this moment, with you. Sharing what they can and cannot remember through words, moving images, movement and music. These characters, the ones left behind, tell us of human rights and wrongs, terror and beauty, prisons and bridges, borders and imaginary maps, irreparable losses and indestructible hope.
