Words on the play by Miriam Laurence
Although it's set forty years ago five years after Hurricane Camille swept through Hazlehurst Mississippi, Crimes of the Heart is a timeless play chock-full of humanity, wacky humour and multi-faceted characters.
The three McGrath sisters, whose background abounds in comic Southern Gothic tragedy full of romantic misfortune are going through a bad day -- as bad as the day their father ran away and their mother hung herself with the family cat.
As we come to know about them, their unfortunate romances, their difficult childhood, we grow to love their mad-cap passion, their playful and sometimes witless intelligence, their boundless zeal for life.
With its strong and difficult multi-faceted roles, Crimes of the Heart is a gift for actors and directors. It takes us back to the core of tragedy and comedy; it allows us to work on the things that matter most in our craft – relationship, place, connection; to delve into our hearts and souls and reveal the unifying themes in our lives.
