Tapestry Opera’s Opera Briefs series returns this fall with Winter Shorts, running from Nov. 30 to Dec. 3, 2017. Starring soprano Jacqueline Woodley, mezzo-soprano Erica Iris, tenor Keith Klassen, and baritone Alex Dobson, Tapestry Briefs: Winter Shorts showcases eight ground-breaking opera scenes developed during the 2016 Composer-Librettist Laboratory (LIBLAB), a speed-dating-like creative intensive. Similar to film shorts, some briefs are perfect miniatures that stand alone as dramatic and musical pieces, while others may lead to full commissions for future productions.
Creators of the shorts have drawn inspiration from many current events and contemporary concerns, including the Syrian refugee crisis, robot warfare and dysfunctional millennial relationships. This year’s featured artists include composers Afarin Mansouri, Iman Habibi, Kit Soden, and Norbert Palej and librettists Bobby Theodore, Marcia Johnson, Phoebe Tsang and Jessica Murphy Moo. From the transcendent to the sublime, this mini-festival proves the vital potential of opera in a changing world.
