Cahoots is embarking on a new linguistic initiative, bringing works in home languages to Chinese and Tamil communities concentrated in Toronto’s eastern suburbs. On November 23rd and November 25th, LIFT OFF! Scarborough, Cahoots’ annual festival of readings and works-in-development, will feature two diasporic works: THE MOTHER TONGUE PROJECT | 母語項目by Jasmine Chen and En Lai Mah in Mandarin and English; and a Tamil version of THE ENCHANTED LOOM | மந்திரத் தறி by Suvendrini Lena, translated by Dushy Gnanapragasam (Asylum Theatre Group | புகலி அரங்கக் குழு).
The two-day event kicks off Thursday, November 23rd at 7:00 pm at the Scarborough Civic Centre with a new multimedia work by Jasmine Chen and En Lai Mah. THE MOTHER TONGUE PROJECT | 母語項 brings generations together through language, song and martial arts. Through recorded interviews, first-generation artists connect with their parents in a surprising and thoughtful journey through their family histories. How will cultural inheritance evolve in the hands of the next generation?
LIFT OFF! Scarborough returns Saturday, November 25th at 1:00 pm with excerpts of a special Tamil translation of Suvendrini Lena’s THE ENCHANTED LOOM | மந்திரத் தறி, coordinated in partnership with Toronto’s Asylum Theatre Group. Translated by Dushy Gnanapragasam, the play explores the aftermath of the Sri Lankan civil war for a Tamil family now in based in Toronto. This poetic play, part medical, part mystical is a harrowing tale of loss and hope that reminds us of the joys and pain of unconditional love for family and freedom. Originally developed and produced by Cahoots Theatre, the English language play premiered in November 2016 in Toronto, in association with Factory Theatre.
This season, Cahoots proudly presents LIFT OFF! Scarborough in two venues in one of the most diversely populated areas in the country. With works speaking directly to two of Scarborough largest cultural communities – in their home languages – Cahoots strives to inspire deeper conversations between artists, audiences and all who call Canada home.
