Inspired by Shakespeare's Macbeth, director Michael Kelly and the company explore the themes of this great tragedy using the larger-than-life theatrical technique of mask in conjunction with an edited text, movement and music. Through its' innovative use of the mask, Mask and Madness in Macbeth both heightens and distorts the action and emotional arc of the play. This is Macbeth like you've never seen it before! Inspired by a series of Shakespeare workshops he had done with Workman Arts members, those who have received mental health services, Kelly has used his experiences to make connections between the worlds of theatre and mental illness. He found that the participants' insights on the language and poetic imagery ranged from insightful, unusual and remarkable, to chaotically disordered. Kelly observed that their heightened sensitivity was mirrored in the world of Shakespeare's Macbeth - a heightened world in crisis, where disorder and chaos gives way to fear and eventually madness. The world that Shakespeare so masterfully creates in Macbeth is not unlike the realities of many mental health consumers, whose worlds are very often in crisis.
Suitable for students grades 7 and up, Mask and Madness in Macbeth, through its' use of masks, both heightens and distorts the actions played out in front of the audience. Madness, itself like an off-kilter lens through which the world is seen, is metaphorically represented by the masks that the actors wear - sometimes grotesque, sometimes silly, sometimes haunted.
