Shaw Festival’s Saint Joan Acclaimed in Chicago PDF Print E-mail
Media Release #2 Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, January 15, 2008 . . . Saint Joan, the Shaw Festival’s flagship Shaw production of the 2007 season, opened to a standing ovation and unanimous rave reviews in Chicago, where it is now playing at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater.  The Shaw makes its debut in Chicago with this production, which is directed by Artistic Director Jackie Maxwell and presented as part of the CST’s The World’s Stage Series. Saint Joan opened on January 10 and runs until January 20. The Chicago production has won acclaim for the Shaw Festival from Chicago audiences and critics alike. Here is what critics had to say about Saint Joan: “That sensation of prescience and the gaining of a larger historical context for events of the moment – which Jackie Maxwell’s superbly spoken and also profoundly moving production greatly engenders – is the best rationale for attending revivals of 85-year-old plays.”“The verbal fluency of these highly articulate Canadian actors won’t come as any surprise to the many Chicagoans who routinely drive to support the Shaw Festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario.”“… the great strength of (Tara Rosling’s) exceedingly fine and powerfully rooted performance, set amidst a sea of superbly crafted acting, is that it shows us a young idealist who simply doesn’t yet understand how the fearful old guard will always bring you down rather than give up their own power.”-         Chicago Tribune “The Shaw Festival of Canada comes to Chicago with a polished, strikingly handsome production of Saint Joan, demonstrating with aplomb the value of a company that devotes itself to a playwright’s work over a long period of time.”-         Variety “The Shaw Festival of Canada arrived for its Chicago debut well-armed and emerged victorious.”“The ensemble … is superb. Rosling’s intuitive performance embodies the charm, exuberance and pathos of this discreetly moving production. She’s marvelous.”-         Daily Herald Reflecting on The Shaw’s reception in Chicago, Jackie Maxwell notes: “We’ve long believed that it is important for us to take our work on the road, so we’re thrilled to be performing in the great theatre city of Chicago. We are honored to be performing in Chicago Shakespeare’s beautiful theatre and are proud to join the ranks of the international companies it has presented.” In 1923 Bernard Shaw took the extraordinary story of Joan of Arc, and brilliantly retold it in a masterpiece that revealed Shaw as at the height of his power as a playwright. The cast also includes Ben Carlson as Cauchon, Harry Judge as the Dauphin, Peter Krantz as de Stogumber, Patrick McManus as Dunois, and Patrick Galligan as Warwick, as well as Norman Browning, Andrew Bunker, Martin Happer, Douglas E. Hughes, Billy Lake, Thom Marriott, Jesse Martyn, Marla McLean, Ric Reid and Michael Strathmore.  Saint Joan is designed by Sue LePage, with lighting design by Kevin Lamotte and original music by Paul Sportelli. The stage management team includes Stage Manager Allan Teichman and Assistant Stage Manager Amy Jewell. The 2008 season is proudly presented by HSBC Bank Canada/HSBC Bank USA, N.A.  -30- Please visit our website at www.shawfest.com for other Shaw Festival media releases. For more information, or to download images from our image bank to accompany this release, members of the media may contact: Odette YazbeckPublic Relations Director905-468-2153 or1-800-657-1106 ext. 222 This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it  Patti BroughtonPublic Relations Co-ordinator905-468-2153 or1-800-657-1106 ext. 224 This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
