Mississauga: Theatre Erindale presents “Blithe Spirit” January 24-February 3

Tuesday, January 8, 2019

Blithe Spirit sparkles with out-of-this-world charm and spectral hijinks.” - Bag & Baggage

“[It is] the outrageous frivolity with which Coward treats mortality that makes the piece so bracing” - The Daily Telegraph

“It’s the gossamer-like nature of the piece, its sheer levity of spirit, that makes it such an enduring achievement" - The Daily Telegraph

Theatre Erindale's Transformative season continues with Noël Coward’s comedic classic Blithe Spirit.

Marriage. Ghosts. Noël Coward. When a séance goes horribly wrong, novelist Charles Condomine must cope with the ghost of his ex-wife terrorizing his second wife and threatening his new marriage. This revenge-filled comedy, fuelled by scheming and driven by a remorseless wit, remains as brilliantly and cuttingly hilarious now as it was in the 1940s. Directed by Professor Melee Hutton.

Hutton says “How to survive being stifled by passion, love and desire, or even worse, strangled by banality and mundane routine is the central theme of Coward’s work; most of which examines the battle between personal freedom and social constraint, sexual freedom over marital responsibility, desire over domination. And, throughout his plays men and women crack and fall in equal measure. Rules and moral judgment are what Coward challenged and he did it with such astounding, extraordinary wit that is easy to miss that he was doing it at all.”
