Toronto: Dave Carley’s new play “Canadian Rajah” runs January 30-February 16, 2019

Thursday, January 3, 2019

CANADIAN RAJAH is a new play written by Governor General Award Nominated playwright, Dave Carley (Midnight Madness, Writing With Our Feet, The Edible Woman). It tells the true story of Esca Brooke – the firstborn son of one of the legendary “White Rajahs” of Sarawak.

Although Esca Brooke should have been first in line to be the Rajah of Sarawak (now part of Malaysia), he was exiled to the backwoods of Canada where he would go on to become a prosperous and respected member of Canadian society in his own right. However, as he aged, there was one thing still missing from Esca’s life that he badly craved: acknowledgement of his royal lineage in Sarawak. CANADIAN RAJAH depicts the dramatic showdown between Esca Brooke and the Ranee of Sarawak, as Esca battles for recognition.

CANADIAN RAJAH makes its World Premiere in the Ballroom at the historic Campbell House Museum starting Wednesday January 30th, 2019 and runs until Sunday February 17th. Tickets are available now at canadianrajah.brownpapertickets.com.

CANADIAN RAJAH stars Chick Reid (Stratford Festival and Shaw Festival) as the Ranee of Sarawak and Jon de Leon (Stratford, Factory Theatre) as Esca Brooke, under the direction of Sarah Phillips (former Artistic Director of The Festival Players of Prince Edward County) and produced by Vince Deiulis (Theatre Nidãna).

The Canadian Rajah Collective is a Toronto-based theatre collective, formed with the intention of sharing the new play, CANADIAN RAJAH, with audiences in Canada. This is a Canadian Actors’ Equity Association production under the Artists’ Collective Policy.
