Toronto: Aluna Theatre presents the premiere of “The Solitudes” January 7-18, 2020

Wednesday, November 20, 2019

Aluna Theatre, in association with Nightwood Theatre, is proud to announce the premiere of The Solitudes.

“I return to the place where I was born, and realize that it is no longer home”

Eight women follow the thread of history and the bloodlines that brought each of them to this land, to this moment in their journeys towards home. Is home a house? Is home a “homeland?” Their offering: eight recipes for transforming our solitudes, and an invitation to sit at the table.

Inspired by the women of One Hundred Years of Solitude (by Gabriel Garcia Marquez), The Solitudes is a provocative, humorous, and visually charged experimental performance that conjures the many forces of separation that have overtaken our lives.

“In these times of cancel culture, misinformation, willing forgetfulness, and the acceptance of lies, speaking one’s truth becomes an act of protest, and a call to action,” says Lead Creator / Director Beatriz Pizano. “This makes The Solitudes an extremely risky proposition. These eight women speak out, not only for themselves, but to honour their ancestors, and speak to generations to come.”

The Solitudes is Aluna Theatre’s most ambitious production to date. Its premiere follows two years of development with a core creative team led by acclaimed playwright and performer Beatriz Pizano, alongside ensemble members Lara Arabian, Brefny Caribou, Liliana Suarez, Janis Mayers, Rosalba Martinni, Michelle Polak, Sofia Rodriguez, and Rhoma Spencer.

They are joined by an award-winning design team of Trevor Schwellnus (Scenic / Projections), Rebecca Vandevelde (Lighting), Vanessa Fischer (Costumes), Brandon Valdivia (Sound / Original Composition), and Victoria Mata (Movement).
