Toronto: By popular demand “Cottagers and Indians” returns to Tarragon Theatre February 5-24

Wednesday, February 6, 2019

Richard Rose, Artistic Director of Tarragon Theatre, is excited to announce the return of Cottagers and Indians this February. The comedic, poignant play written by Drew Hayden Taylor runs in Tarragon Theatre’s Extraspace from February 5 - 24, 2019 (opening February 6).

Wild rice sparks a battle royal between a native farmer and a white cottager, whose increasingly bitter dispute becomes a microcosm for reconciliation. Told with warmth and humour, and encompassing issues of community, respect and ownership, Cottagers & Indians is a tale for our times – and a food fight for the ages.

In Cottagers and Indians, audiences witness an example of the clash of cultures as it’s taken place for several centuries. Based on real events, a member of a Kawartha First Nation struggles to maintain his wild rice crops in the lake he shares with property owners. They fear a decrease in enjoyable recreation and property value, he fears a loss of his culture and his right to plant wild rice.

Taylor displays a deft hand, bringing together satire and a sharp commentary, working to bring to light a significant conflict in an engaging and approachable format.

The return of Cottagers and Indians features an all new cast in television and stage actor Billy Merasty and Stratford regular, Carmen Grant.

Cottagers and Indians runs February 5 - 24, 2019 opening on Wednesday, February 6.
