Toronto: Theatre Passe Muraille and Broadleaf Theatre present “The Chemical Valley Project” April 4-20

Wednesday, March 20, 2019

Located in Sarnia, Ontario, the Aamjiwnaang First Nations reserve and its nine hundred residents are smothered by one of Canada’s largest petrochemical corridors: the Chemical Valley. Siblings Vanessa Gray and Lindsay Beze Gray dedicate their lives to fighting the pollution that threatens their community’s health, safety, and future. In The Chemical Valley Project, theatre makers and friends Julia Howman and Kevin Matthew Wong (Honourable Mention for Theatre Centre’s Emerging Artist Award, SummerWorks 2017) document Vanessa and Lindsay’s vital activism as land defenders and water protectors through an innovative blend of projection design, documentary theatre, and a warm conversational solo performance by Kevin Matthew Wong. The Chemical Valley Project sparks discussions on Canadian environmental policy, treaty rights, and Indigenous relations, settler identities, as well as the current nature of Canadian identity and values.

After successful workshops through Theatre Passe Muraille’s Buzz Series and the 2017 SummerWorks Festival, and a tour through Ontario, British Columbia, and Germany, The Chemical Valley Project received praise for its production design, visual magic, and vital message; and makes its Toronto debut at the Theatre Passe Muraille Backspace April 4 - 20, 2019.
