Ottawa: The National Arts Centre announces its 2019/20 children’s and youth French programming

Thursday, April 25, 2019

The Children and Youth Programming, conceived by Mélanie Dumont, beautifully enriches the 2019-2020 season of the French Theatre with six fantastically inventive and crazy propositions. Yours to discover on-line already!

The stage will renew itself into a thousand and one shapes, as a huge playing ground to explore. Now a gigantic forest, now a bouncing big drum, tunnels where prejudices can be confronted and buried, a soft square where to frolic all together, imaginary boundary or a channel of words in-between two friendly shores...

BIG BANG FESTIVAL IS BACK IN TOWN IN 2020!

Following the amazing success of the BIG BANG Festival, which attracted on the 17th and 18th of February 2019, more than 8000 visitors of all ages to the NAC, interested or just curious, this event will be happening again, next year, with still more activities and installations around music, for the whole family.

French Theatre will take part of the festive week-end with one international work welcome in its Children and Youth Programming, celebrating the BIG BANG 2020.

UNE LUNE ENTRE DEUX MAISONS

Ages 3 to 6

November 2 — 3, 2019
By Le Carrousel, compagnie de théâtre

The space between Plume’s house and Taciturne’s house is a chasm. A whole moon can fit into it! With its playground-like set and its moving performances, this show about overcoming our fear of the unfamiliar accurately measures the internal temperature of a child’s heart.

LÉVRIERS

All ages, 14+

December 6 — 7, 2019
By Nervous Hunter in coproduction with MAI (Montréal, arts interculturels) Presented by NAC French Theatre and Théâtre la Catapulte

A bare stage, a few chairs, a director and five performers playing themselves—maybe it’s not even a show? And yet, Sophie Gee has created a poignant work that digs through the junk pile of our everyday failures to extract pearls of humanity.

LE PROBLÈME AVEC LE ROSE

Ages 6 to 12

December 14 — 15, 2019
By Le Petit Théâtre de Sherbrooke in coproduction with La [parenthèse] / Christophe Garcia

An idea—a pretty silly one at that—turns the world of four friends upside down. Pink is for girls? Pffft! Whatever! Yes, but what if? In this lively show, Érika Tremblay-Roy’s resonant text is reflected in the vibrant dance of Christophe Garcia.

PAKMAN

Ages 6 to 12

February 15 — 17, 2019
Performances on February 16 and 17 (Family Day in Ontario) are part of the BIG BANG Festival, two days of sound adventures and experiments for the whole family, big and small ears alike. (Full program coming soon: bigbangfestival.ca)
By Post uit Hessdalen in coproduction with Theater op de Markt et MiramirO

We received a box from Europe containing a whole show! You wouldn’t believe all the wild and wonderful things we found when we opened it! So we quickly closed it again so you could enjoythe same surprise. Because, let’s face it, art makes everything more fun!

LES MOTS SECRETS

Ages 7 to 12

April 18 — 19, 2020
By Théâtre Triangle Vital

Here we have a beautiful celebration of words: words as playthings, as music, as links between humans. In this rhythmic, sometimes boisterous show, director André Perrier has fun giving poetry a solid presence—you can almost touch it.

SOUS LA FEUILLE

Ages 18 months to 5 years old

May 9 — 10, 2020
By Josué Beaucage and Ariane Voineau

Partners Ariane and Josué have draped the theatre in colourful tents and cozy furs to welcome us to the hushed atmosphere of a night by the fireside. Under the huge leaf, through dance and music, we are both tiny and gigantic!

VISUAL ARTWORK BY JULIE CHARLAND

The visual artist and costume designer Julie Charland gathered her more inventive and cheerful colours to create imaginative stories for each work from this upcoming season.

In each of her drawings, a detail is hiding to perhaps foresee what will happen on the stage… Her artwork opens a gateway for the audience until the curtain is finally drawn!
