Toronto: Witchboy Theatre and Blood Pact Theatre present “The Doll Play” May 21-June 8

Wednesday, April 24, 2019

The Doll Play: A Miniature Revolution tells the story of a dysfunctional community of dolls who live in the waiting room of a child psychologist’s office. Having suffered years of mistreatment and abuse at the hands of the psychologist’s young patients, the dolls are galvanized to a new vengeful purpose by the sudden appearance of Anne and Andy, two very particular dolls — with a very particular purpose — that have just escaped their long isolation in the psychologist’s desk drawer. Infuriated by the extent of the trauma suffered by these new arrivals, the dolls mobilize their rage and resentment and target it at the ultimate scapegoat: the psychologist herself. An allegorical tale in the style of Animal Farm, The Doll Play is a darkly satirical exploration of the insidious ways trauma imprints on the human psyche and infiltrates a community.

Set to be the first show at Blood Pact Theatre’s brand new space, Grand Canyon, the world premiere of The Doll Play: A Miniature Revolution is an exciting co-production by Witchboy Theatre & Blood Pact Theatre. The play stars an impressive cast of ten of the hottest actors in Toronto’s indie and professional theatre scenes.  Writer/director Joanne Sarazen took a short hiatus from her work as a playwright to attend CFC Writer’s Lab. Her first screenplay, Tammy’s Always Dying, was optioned and shot in the winter of 2018. She is now returning to theatre with an original work that delves into the serious, yet pressing effects of trauma and abuse.

Both Witchboy Theatre and Blood Pact Theatre have proved themselves as successful creators in the Toronto theatre community. Witchboy’s latest production, What Happened Was, earned rave reviews, and Breanna Dillon picked up a 2018 Dora Mavor Moore nomination for her role as Jackie. Following the success of their latest works, After Wrestling (Factory Theatre/Storefront Theatre 2018) and Kill Your Parents in Viking, Alberta (Storefront Theatre 2016), which both premiered to rave reviews in Toronto, Blood Pact Theatre is cementing their status as “excellent storytellers bringing unique, fresh voices to the Canadian theatre scene” (NOW Magazine). This electrifying partnership will only solidify both theatre companies as hit-makers in the Toronto scene.
