Thursday, May 9, 2019

The Fairy Doll was premiered at the Vienna Court Opera on the 4th October 1888. Composed by the Austrian Josef Bayer the score has a regimental music flavour and was the greatest ballet success for the Vienna Court Opera ever; still being performed to this day. The story is about a toy store that has a collection of beautiful lifelike dolls. Favourite of them all is the Fairy Doll. At night when everyone goes to sleep the Fairy Doll awakes and uses her magic to bring the entire toy store to life.

Artistic Director Tatiana Stepanova keeps the tradition of the Fairy Doll with stunning costumes, beautiful sets, and captivating choreography. This whimsical tale is for all to enjoy.

About the ballet:

Artistic Director Tatiana Stepanova

The Fairy Doll, or Die Puppenfee, was premiered at the Vienna Court Opera on the 4th October 1888, a ballet which owes its inspiration to E.T.A Hoffman’s 1815 story the Sandman in which a mechanical doll comes to life.

The story also inspired Offenbach to compose the Tales of Hoffman and Delibes to write the score for Coppélia. The Fairy Doll was in turn an inspiration for La Boutique Fantasque.
