Toronto: Argentinian physical comedy “Un poyo rojo” plays Toronto October 3-11
Monday, September 9, 2019
Canadian Stage welcomes to Toronto for the first time the international comedy/dance smash hit from Argentina, UN POYO ROJO, to the Marilyn and Charles Baillie Theatre, October 3-11, 2019. A riotous mash-up of dance, sport and sexuality, this physical theatre masterpiece has been wowing audiences around the world, non-stop, for the past eight years.
Using only body language, in an empty locker room two gifted acrobatic actors depict every hue of masculine identity -- from testosterone-fuelled virility to artful seduction – in this examination of manhood. Channeling the physical comedic genius of Charlie Chaplin, The Three Stooges and Abbott and Costello, the men move effortlessly from wrestling to dance, acrobatics to physical comedy in this epic slapstick creation that is part dance battle, part seduction and a whole lot of fun!
“I am excited to share with Toronto audiences for the first time this funny, imaginative and irresistible show from Argentina,” says Canadian Stage Artistic Director Brendan Healy. “It is a virtuosic performance that uses contemporary dance, acrobatics, and clown to playfully subvert and explore stereotypes of masculinity. We are thrilled to be hosting this unique show that has been enjoyed by audiences around the world.”
A strikingly hilarious and thrilling display of man’s physical and spiritual possibilities, UN POYO ROJO invites us to not only laugh at ourselves, but to also accept the different relationships between two men.
