Toronto: Kat Sandler’s new comedy “Yaga” opens the 2019/2020 Tarragon season September 25
Tuesday, September 3, 2019
Tarragon Theatre is thrilled to start the 2019/2020 season by announcing the world premiere of hotly anticipated play, Yaga. The play by much loved Dora Award-winning writer and director, Kat Sandler, runs in Tarragon’s Mainspace September 17 - October 20, 2019 (opening September 25).
Yaga reunites previous collaborators Kat Sandler and Dora winner Claire Armstrong alongside screen and stage actor William Greenblatt and Stratford legend Seana McKenna.
From the Dora Award-winning mind of Kat Sandler (Mustard), Yaga is genre-bending fairy tale meets whodunit inspired by the notorious figure of Baba Yaga, the hideous old witch who lives alone in the woods grinding the bones of the wicked. A gruesome murder in a small town leads a local sheriff, a young detective and a university professor with a taste for younger men into a labyrinth of secret lives, ancient magic and multiple suspects.
A play that gives voice to the wicked old witch, Yaga is part thriller, part revenge play and lots of comedy.
Sandler’s newest work takes a comedic journey filled with feminism and witchcraft to solve a mysterious smalltown murder. Yaga is a gruesome murder, an affair between an older woman and her much younger student, and the key question: what happened to his bones? Breathing a feminist view to the modern telling of this story, Sandler’s whodunit becomes a backdrop to an exploration of aging and sexuality.
"We’re thrilled to launch Tarragon’s Mainspace season for 2019/20 with the world premiere of Kat Sandler’s Yaga,” notes Tarragon’s Artistic Director Richard Rose. "Our audiences are undoubtedly looking forward to diving into Kat’s newest work, which offers a smart, comedic, modern take on the legend of Baba Yaga.”
Yaga features Claire Armstrong (Dora Award - Outstanding Performance, After Miss Julie, Slamdance Grand Jury Prize winning film, Dim The Flourescents), William Greenblatt (Coal Mine Theatre’s The Aliens) and legendary Stratford actor, Seana McKenna (Order of Canada, Dora Award - Female Lead, Orpheus Descending and Shaw’s Saint Joan). Yaga is written and directed by Dora Award winner Kat Sandler.
Yaga runs in Tarragon Theatre’s Mainspace from September 17 - October 20, opening officially Wednesday, September 25.

“Bad children are the softest, and the easiest to eat; but a bad man’s bones hold power, power tastes like salt, and we love salt more than anything.”
