Toronto: New theatrical mentorship website GhostLight launches on May 8

Friday, April 24, 2020

GhostLight launches as an online theatrical mentorship platform with Canadian literary icon Margaret Atwood and renowned Canadian journalist and stateswoman, The Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson on May 8th 8:00pm (EST) in a LIVE stream on our YouTube channel. They will be joined by celebrated improvisational comedian Colin Mochrie (Whose Line is it Anyway?) and multi-talented musician and theatre-artist, Torquil Campbell (co-lead singer/songwriter for Stars).

“Our goal at GhostLight is to create a national forum for Canadian artists to gather, collaborate and create across a variety of digital platforms. I can’t think of a better way to launch our site and our mission, than listening to the hearts and minds of some of our cultural luminaries. I am thrilled to host these Canadian icons and legends at our inaugural Friday Night at the GhostLight, in what will no doubt be an engaging, illuminating and ultimately hopeful evening of artistic communion for all of us in these challenging times.” - Co-founder and Creative Director Graham Abbey.

This launch event, entitled “Friday Night at the The GhostLight“ is the first installment of GhostLight’s interview series featuring iconic Canadian cultural figures. The series will allow artists and art enthusiasts from across the country to listen and engage as a national community with some of our great creative catalysts.

Following this launch event, GhostLight will begin our first session of theatrical training.  All Spring session classes are offered free of charge. Pay-what-you-are-able donations are accepted, with 50% of all proceeds going to the AFC, to support our colleagues.

“Graham and I had the great fortune to learn from remarkable Canadian Theatre mentors at formative moments in our careers. We hope that, in this uncertain time, GhostLight can provide the same access we had in a virtual realm. I am deeply inspired by the response we’ve received, with so many leading Canadian Theatre artists reaching out to us with offers of support” said Co-founder and Associate Creative Director Dylan Trowbridge

Visit our class portal at www.ghostlight.ca with our first class “Playwriting 101” with Governor General Award-winning playwright Erin Shields (Paradise Lost, If We Were Birds) starting May 14th, 2020, available now for registration.  More classes will be added in the coming days and weeks. Confirmed faculty and mentors for 2020 include Seana Mckenna, Dion Johnstone, Atom Egoyan, Michael Healey, Tom Rooney, Chilina Kennedy, EB Smith, Bruce Dow, Kat Sandler, Jeanette Lambermont-Morey, and more to be announced.

Ghost lights have stood vigil over unoccupied theatres for years, protecting the stage in the darkness and illuminating the space for creative spirits to play in the void. Our mission is to sustain this vigil in the virtual world by providing a gathering place for teaching, mentorship and exploration. Founded by theatre artists Graham Abbey and Dylan Trowbridge and with www.ghostlight.ca as our home base, we provide Canadian theatre artists the opportunity to stay active, inspired and engaged by connecting them with some of the nation’s most exciting artists and mentors.
