Ottawa: Odyssey Theatre holds a free online reading of Sheridan’s “The School for Scandal” on May 7

Monday, May 4, 2020

What’s the harm in a little gossip every now and then?

Richard Brinsley Sheridan’s The School for Scandal is one of the most brilliant English comedies of all time – riddled with gossip, mistaken identity, money and backstabbing. This whimsical satire explores the pernicious effects of gossip, slander and an obsessive devotion to scandal. Sheridan’s gossips and scandal peddlers would feel right at home in today’s world of social media trolls and influencers, cyber bullies and rumour mongers.

Ten actors, playing 18 characters, have been workshopping the script with Artistic Director Laurie Steven to adapt it for mask and movement.  During the live reading, you will be able to submit questions and comments in real time (for the first time ever!). At the end, Laurie and the cast will answer some of your questions. As a special bonus, during the intermission – hear from the cast and have a sneak peek of early designs of the show.

The reading will run approximately 3 hours with a 15 minute intermission.
