Toronto: CBC Arts’s Emancipation Day programming includes Ngozi Paul’s “Free Up!”
Friday, July 31, 2020
This Saturday August 1st is Emancipation Day - a day when we celebrate the abolishment of the enslavement of African peoples in all British colonies worldwide.
CBC Arts has partnered with Ngozi Paul’s Emancipation Arts to broadcast this annual Youth Led celebration online, featuring music, theatre, dance and spoken word. Crow’s Theatre was one of the locations for the filming of this year’s ‘Free Up’ presentation, with other performances filmed at the Theatre Centre and Soulpepper Theatre. We were delighted to welcome art and artists back into Streetcar Crowsnest for this important celebration, and thrilled to once again work with Ngozi who was last seen on stage at Crow’s in The Assembly (2018), A & R Angels (2017), The Watershed (2015), as well as her Dora Award winning solo show - The Emancipation of Miss Lovely in 2017.
Free Up! is part of CBC’s special Emancipation Day programming which also includes Being Black in Canada and an encore broadcast of the film adaptation of Lawrence Hill’s The Book of Negroes.
