Toronto: Necessary Angel Theatre Company releases more videos of “The Resilience Project”

Thursday, July 16, 2020

Necessary Angel Theatre Company this evening released a series of original artistic commissions in the form of video shorts, as part of The Resilience Project by Necessary Angel. The Resilience Project as a whole encompasses several new artistic and creative offerings, using art to address a shared sense of grief in honest, funny, and cathartic ways.

“Theatre artists, artistic creation and innovation, and meaning-making are at the very centre of everything we do at Necessary Angel,” said Artistic Director Alan Dilworth. “Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, our team has been exploring new ways to make meaning and connect with our communities in the face of the staggering challenges and changing circumstances of this time.”

Dilworth commissioned artists to create six, short digital works in response to their personal experience of isolation and change during the COVID-19 pandemic. The video commissions were staggered over eight weeks, from April 28 to June 20, covering a wide swath of local and global upheaval. Marie Farsi, Sina Gilani and Azad Imanirad, Tehseen and Aasim Jaffri, Erin Brandenburg, Alana Bridgewater and Meegwun Fairbrother have created the first of these unique and personal offerings.

Each work of The Resilience Project-SHORTS is a personal artistic snapshot, of a now past, present moment. The only parameters the artists were given were that their piece needed to be between one and five minutes, and they needed to be both personal and, given the great uncertainty and precarity of this time, an offering for others.

For Necessary Angel The Resilience Project -SHORTS have been a way to centre and serve artists, and a way to meditate and reflect on the moment. Moving forward, they are both a collection and a reminder of this unforgettable time.

On May 19, 2020 Necessary Angel launched Part One of The Resilience Project: The Virtual Stillness Room. The Stillness Room is a coming together to experience the calming and quietly transformative qualities of stillness, silence and connection.

What began as a way for theatre workers to find some stillness in the eye of the creative storm, has become a virtual offering for all in this time of uncertainty and precarity. The Stillness Room takes place every Tuesday and Thursday from 4:30-5:00 p.m. EDT.
