Toronto: Why Not Theatre’s film about David Suzuki streams December 3-19

Wednesday, November 3, 2021

Today, we couldn't be more excited to announce the world premiere of Why Not's first feature film, What You Won't Do For Love.

“It’s been a once in a lifetime opportunity to make a play with two Canadian legends like David Suzuki and Tara Cullis. Our play had one audience before COVID changed the world. As the climate emergency becomes more severe it became even more pressing for us to share this hopeful love letter to the world. Making a film has been terrifying and new and it lends itself to the kind of intimate stories we share!”

— Ravi Jain, Co-Director, Co-Writer, Original Performance Concept

When artist Miriam Fernandes approaches David Suzuki to create a theatre piece about climate change, she expects to write about David’s perspective as a scientist. Instead, she discovers the boundless vision and efforts of Tara Cullis, a literature scholar, climate organizer, and David’s life partner. Miriam realizes that David and Tara’s decades-long love for each other, and for family and friends, has clarified and strengthened their resolve to fight for the planet.

In this charming and conversational film, renowned environmentalists David Suzuki and Tara Cullis share a lifetime of adventures, inspiration, and love with newlyweds Miriam and Sturla.

What You Won't Do For Love premieres December 3 - 19, 2021.

“It has been so inspiring to pull back the curtain and shine a spotlight on the dynamo activist and organizer Tara Cullis, whose tireless work and unwavering vision has contributed greatly to the climate movement and the David Suzuki we know and love. We also see David in a surprisingly casual new light — rather than a broadcaster he is a friend, a lover, a grandfather, and an elder”.

— Kevin Matthew Wong, Co-Director, Producer, Dramaturg

50% of the show’s net box office proceeds will be donated to the David Suzuki Foundation.
