Opera Atelier’s production of Something Rich & Strange (OA’s first livestream production) continues to generate a great deal of interest. In fact, the opening black and white segment, The Eye and Eye’s Delight, featuring Soprano Measha Brueggergosman, the Artists of Atelier Ballet, and Tafelmusik, has been accepted by the Experimental Dance & Music Film Festival, and will have screenings in Los Angeles, and in Toronto.
It will also be showcased by Chicago’s Harris Theatre for Music and Dance, as part of the Harris Theatre’s Virtual Stage programming, and as a special tribute to Patricia Barretto, OA’s former Executive Director, and President and CEO of The Harris Theatre for the past three years until her tragic death in March of 2020.
Recently, the production was also given an international platform as part of the Night of Ideas, curated by the Alliance Française, L’Institut Français and the Consulate General of France, which has attracted more than 180,000 participants and 7 million followers.
The Eye and Eye’s Delight is part of Opera Atelier’s first commission of new music created by Canadian composer Edwin Huizinga and filmed by the extraordinary young Toronto filmmaker, Marcel Canzona. Edwin Huizinga’s earlier iterations of this work have been featured on two occasions in the Royal Chapel at Versailles, at the Harris Theatre for Music and Dance, and in Toronto. Plans are in place to realize this composition as a fully staged production created specifically for film.
