Toronto: Apply to Soulpepper’s Queer Youth Cabaret, “QueerFutures 2099”, by April 4
Thursday, March 25, 2021
The 2nd Annual Soulpepper Queer Youth Cabaret is returning after a successful inaugural launch in 2020. Cultivated from “Queer Place, Queer Space”, QueerFutures 2099 sets its sights towards the future of queerness. How will queerness and queer art take form in 80 years? How do we, as queer and trans artists, connect with our communities through art, media, and storytelling as we contemplate our futures? What does queerness look like at the turn of the 22nd Century?
Application Deadline: April 4, 2020 11:59PM EST
Queer Futurism invites us to look on the horizon of what queer and trans identities could be. This is in contrast to looking at it from what queerness is in the present. It is important to note that queer futurism builds upon other theories such as Afrofuturism, and instead of working against these identities, works in tandem. Queer Futurism acts as a form of resistance against erasure and stereotypes, by radically imagining that anything is possible. We implore you to create from a lens of intersectional queerness, creating art from all parts of you, whatever that might be!
The 2021 iteration of the Queer Youth Cabaret includes an expanded timeframe for artist workshops, industry/mentor meetings, as well as performance filming dates.
Workshops & Industry Mentor Meetings will give the selected artists an opportunity to meet and learn from one another, while receiving advice or mentorship from industry professionals. Through these meetings, insights and feedback will be distilled to artists in preparation for the final filming of their pieces.
Artist Performance Filming is scheduled for May 2021 at The Young Centre for the Performing Arts OR in the surrounding St. Lawrence Neighbourhood. If the artist plans to utilize film, animation, or new media and wishes to produce the visual element themselves, please note this in the artistic statement below.
QueerFutures 2099 will air on Thursday, June 24th, 2021. The event will be live-hosted by Heath V. Salazar(Gay Jesus) and Kwaku Okyere. Afterwards, there will be a live talkback including the hosts and all the artists, with a Q & A from the audience. ASL interpretation will be available throughout the entire event.
