St. Catharines: Kaha:wi Dance Theatre presents its large scale outdoor production “SkéN:NEN” October 1-3

Thursday, September 16, 2021

The FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre is proud to announce an ambitious collaboration that will bring the world premiere of SKéN:NEN to St. Catharines’ Burgoyne Woods. Tickets are on sale now for this site-specific multimedia performance, produced by the internationally renowned Kaha:wi Dance Theatre from 1-3 October 2021.

SKéN:NEN is set in a post-environmental catastrophe of 2050 and tells the story of an Auntie and her niece who take refuge at a bunker camp among other climate survivors. The performance will feature awesome 3D mapped projections on the set within the natural setting of an area in Burgoyne Woods.

“The concept skén:nen translates from Kanienʼkéha to mean balance, peace and moving intently in a balanced/peaceful way,” shares Kaha:wi Dance Theatre’s Artistic Director Santee Smith. “It’s easy to ponder and discuss, but much harder to action and embody especially living in an unbalanced environment. Our performance of SKéN:NEN deals with individual and a community’s attempt at rebuilding skén:nen and re-establishing Onkwehon:we’neha after cataclysmic events occur due to climate change, the apex of patri-colonial mindset and extracting from earth.”

TICKETS are on sale now for $25 + HST for the live in-person, reduced capacity outdoor performances of SKéN:NEN. For Saturday's performance, a FREE livestream is being offered as well.
