Montreal: Cirque du Soleil artists begin preparing for “Kurios” opening in Toronto April 14

Wednesday, February 9, 2022

Cirque du Soleil has released a sneak peek inside Day 1 of training for KURIOS - Cabinet of Curiosities, set to make its Toronto premiere in less than 10 weeks. The video, taken from inside Cirque du Soleil’s creative headquarters in Montreal, shows the excitement of the artists preparing and training for what critics have hailed as one of the most over-the-top shows in Cirque du Soleil’s renowned repertoire.

The 387,500 square foot multiplex training facility includes three acrobatic training rooms, dance studio, gym and production theatre. The KURIOS cast of 49 artists from 17 countries began arriving in Montreal since January to begin their journey of physical and creative preparation. The Cirque du Soleil training process can last anywhere from a few weeks to a few months, as the performers become familiar with what is required to bring this creation to life.

The video features group practices for Banquine, the highly trained acrobatic skill of human-flying and aerial tricks from one person to another; acro-net training to master jaw-dropping acrobatics and propelling upwards of 40 feet in the air; and upside-down training where artists hang inverted in the air for long increments of time – up to 3 mins -- to adjust to the physical and sensory effects of being upside down.

In addition to physical training, artists are beginning to immerse themselves in the artistic process of creating their own make-up, performing in elaborate costumes, practicing facial expressions, choreography and much more!

KURIOS - Cabinet of Curiosities opens under the iconic Big Top at Ontario Place on April 14, 2022, for a limited series of performances presented by Sun Life Global Investments.
