Toronto: Theatre Gargantua, the COC and Nightwood Theatre present “The Queen in Me”

Tuesday, February 22, 2022

Theatre Gargantua is thrilled to be partnering with the Canadian Opera Company, Amplified Opera, and Nightwood Theatre on this exciting new production and world premiere of The Queen in Me.

Featuring music from La Bohème, Lucia di Lammermoor, Macbeth, Madama Butterfly, Manon Lescaut, Rigoletto, Salome and The Magic Flute.

Combining comedy, drama, and plenty of opera, this exuberant show by interdisciplinary artist Teiya Kasahara 笠原貞野 (they/them) explores the many ways that race, gender and sexuality are policed in the opera industry.

Through the lens of The Magic Flute's iconic Queen of the Night, the show reclaims space for the multitudes of women, trans, and non-binary individuals excluded from the stage, daring to imagine new narrative possibilities for the art form.

This exciting new work began its journey with Theatre Gargantua in 2017 as a part of our SideStream Cycles. We are so proud of Teiya and this show- we cannot wait to welcome you to the world premiere this summer!
