Thunder Bay: Magnus Theatre announces its 2022/23 season

Saturday, May 28, 2022

The season will kick off on September 29th with THE RUNNER by Christopher Morris, A Human Cargo Production. ZAKA is an Orthodox Jewish volunteer force in Israel. They collect the remains of Jews killed in accidents. When Jacob, a ZAKA volunteer, treats a young woman suspected of stabbing a soldier, his world is changed forever. A powerful thriller from Toronto’s Human Cargo, winner of the 2019 Dora Mavor Moore Awards for Outstanding Production, Outstanding Direction and Outstanding New Play. THE RUNNER runs from September 29th to October 15th.

Next up is the Broadway musical MAN OF LA MANCHA by Dale Wasserman, Mitch Leigh, and Joe Darion. One of the most enduring works of musical theatre, MAN OF LA MANCHA was last staged by Magnus Theatre over 40 years ago. Running from November 10th to December 3rd, this play within a play is the story of a man who seeks decency and beauty (The Impossible Dream) in an increasingly cynical world.

The holiday season will see the return of JACOB MARLEY’S CHRISTMAS CAROL by Tom Mula, running from December 6th to December 22nd. This play retells Charles Dickens’s classic tale from the perspective of Ebenezer Scrooge’s mean, sour, pruney old business partner, Jacob Marley, who must free himself from hellish eternity by redeeming the heart of Scrooge.

Next on the mainstage will be a comedy/thriller – DOCK SPIDER by Bonnie Green. Ken and Chuck find themselves alone on a dock, on an island, in a remote part of a large lake. Chuck is a cagey, local lake guy with a chip truck and a rifle. Ken is an urban, high-flying hedge-fund manager facing a life-changing deadline. Why are they on this dock together, and why the smouldering mistrust? The stakes for both are very, very high. The carp would agree. DOCK SPIDER kicks off the new year running from January 26th to February 11th.

Continuing the season, the dark comedy of HAND TO GOD by Robert Askins will be running March 10th to March 25th. An irreverent, occasionally shocking, and perpetually hysterical romp to hell and back, Hand To God’s exploration of the ideas of faith, morality, and human nature will leave you sore with laughter.

Running from April 20th to May 6th, to finish off the season, will be the World Premiere of the comedy-farce, FATHER PENIBLE by Herbie Barnes, a brand-new adaptation of Moliere’s Tartuffe. In a world where right and wrong are not always clear, Father Penible stands out as a pillar of his community. He is, in fact, a dishonest, hypocritical swindler and is revealed to be nothing like the devout, rich, and holy man he tries to convince everyone that he is. This hysterical new twist on a classic is written by longtime Magnus Theatre collaborator Herbie Barnes.
