Toronto: Voicebox: Opera in Concert presents “The Mother of Us All” on May 22

Friday, May 6, 2022

VOICEBOX: Opera in Concert presents Virgil Thomson and Gertrude Stein’s opera, The Mother of Us All on Sunday, May 22, 2022, at 2:30 pm at the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts in downtown Toronto. Called a ‘pageant’ by Thomson, the two creators imaginatively chronicle the story of Susan B. Anthony and the women’s suffrage movement. In a vivid and gripping age for women’s rights, an impressive character emerges that is both dynamic and pioneering, as relevant and transcendental today as it was for those disenfranchised on the basis of gender, race and sexuality a century and a half ago.

Kate Carver debuts with OIC as Music Director and Pianist and Robert Cooper leads the VOICEBOX: Opera in Concert Chorus. The large cast of emerging and established artists include Meghan Lindsay as Susan B Anthony, Dion Mazerolle as Daniel Webster, Joshua Clemenger as Jo the Loiterer, Evan Korbut as Virgil T, Daniela Agostino as Gertrude Stein and a host of historic and imaginary characters drawn from the ranks of Canada’s emerging artists.

VOICEBOX: Opera in Concert is supported by the Jackman Foundation, The William and Nona Heaslip Foundation, Classical 96.3 FM, Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council, and the Toronto Arts Council. Single tickets are available from the St. Lawrence Centre’s Jane Mallett Theatre Box Office, 27 Front St. East, by phone – 416-366-7723 or 1-800-708-6754 or online at tolive.com. The theatre is wheelchair accessible and close to public transit and municipal parking. All performances are on Sunday afternoons at the St. Lawrence Centre at 2:30 pm.
