Toronto: Outside the March and Factory Theatre present “Trojan Girls & The Outhouse of Atreus” August 3-28

Wednesday, June 15, 2022

OUTSIDE THE MARCH and FACTORY THEATRE are thrilled to present the World Premiere of Gillian Clark’s Trojan Girls & The Outhouse of Atreus, directed by Mitchell Cushman, and featuring performances by Katherine Cullen, Liz Der, Sébastien Heins, Amy Keating, Elena Reyes, Cheyenne Scott, Merlin Simard, and Jeff Yung. Trojan Girls & The Outhouse of Atreus is a two-part immersive theatre experience performed simultaneously in both the Factory Courtyard and the Studio Theatre. Performances run from August 3 to 28, 2022 (Opening Night, Saturday, August 6, 2022 at 7:00PM).

One of her generation’s most original and explosive voices, Gillian Clark (Let’s Try This Standing) has envisioned a world that owes as much to the Greek plays of Euripides as it does to the movie musical GREASE. Outside the March, our country's leader in immersive theatrical storytelling, and Factory Theatre, the home of groundbreaking Canadian playwriting, have teamed up with Clark to offer the one-of-a-kind live, communal experience that audiences have been craving.

Welcome to New Troy, Canada, August 2009. The night of the annual Duck n’ Swing dance. Odysseus hatches a death-defying Prom-posal, Nestra and King Memnon rendezvous in the Outhouse for some old Summer Lovin’, and Cassandra feasts on raw hot dogs while sooth-sayin’ the world’s destruction. Half the audience gathers outdoors around the campfire, and half cuts a rug in the dance hall, while the actors race back-and-forth—inhabiting both the teenagers of New Troy and their middle-aged parents. At intermission audiences switch spaces to experience the other side of the story.

"It's going to be Elektra-fying!"

The two immersive environments are brought to vivid life by an award-winning five-person design team. Anahita Dehbonhie’s scenic design and Jareth Li’s lighting will take over the entirety of Factory Theatre’s historic building, including surprises embedded in every window and balcony. Nick Blais’ costume design will feature over a hundred quick changes, as each actor continuously switches back-and-forth between characters. Sound Designer Heidi Chan and Audio Systems Designer Michael Laird have created an intimate headset experience for the outdoor portion, allowing audiences to disappear fully into the world of New Troy.

An earlier version of Clark’s play was originally presented in 2019 to rave reviews under the title The Ruins, by the acclaimed Nova Scotia-based company Two Planks and a Passion. The team at Outside the March has been working to develop the piece with Clark into this two-part epic over the past three years, with support from the National Arts Centre’s, National Creation Fund.

Tickets prices for Trojan Girls & The Outhouse of Atreus range from $25 – $75, and include a limited number of $0 tickets for every performance. Audiences are invited to select the ticket price option that works best for them to experience the show.
