TO Live and Soulpepper Theatre Company Present ’da Kink in My Hair
Both powerful and uplifting, ’da Kink in my Hair is a musical testament to the challenges and triumphs in the lives of contemporary Black women whose unforgettable stories of love, hope, survival, and redemption are shared through monologues woven together by an original score played live on stage.
Welcome to the world of hairdresser Novelette Campbell, a woman who knows that every head of hair tells a story.
Trey Anthony’s ’da Kink in My Hair spectacularly untangles the triumphs and tragedies of the devotees of Novelette’s hair salon in the heart of Toronto's Caribbean-Canadian community, Eglinton West.
This brand-new production reunites many of the original cast members with director Weyni Mengesha, who directed, wrote the Dora-nominated score and lyrics, and played in the band for the first full production at Theatre Passe Muraille in June 2003 as well as the remount produced by Mirvish Productions at the Princess of Wales Theatre in 2005.
Since its humble beginnings at the Toronto Fringe Festival in 2001, ’da Kink has had major productions across Canada, the United States and England and continues to be produced on stages throughout North America.
In 2007, ’da Kink was adapted for the small screen, making Trey Anthony the first African-Canadian woman to create, write, and produce a primetime television show on a major Canadian network. The two seasons of ’da Kink can currently be seen on Amazon Prime Canada.
