Produced by The Howland Company, in association with Crow’s Theatre, PRODIGAL will run from February 21 to March 12, 2023 at the Guloien Theatre in Streetcar Crowsnest, 345 Carlaw Avenue, Toronto, ON. PRODIGAL, a thrilling new contemporary family drama, examines themes of queerness, privilege, marginalization, and forgiveness as two young men attempt to return to the families they have lost—one to confront his past, and the other to start his future.

“I am so humbled to be working on The Howland Company’s first wholly original play with such an incredible team,” said PRODIGAL writer and director Paolo Santalucia. “This play invites us to reflect on what makes us who we are. I’m so grateful to be exploring it with so many artists who have helped shaped me and who have had such a profound impact on my career.”

PRODIGAL follows the return home of Edmund Clark, the gay, alcoholic, eldest son of a prominent Toronto family, after he is cut off from the family trust. On the way home, Edmund meets Levi, a man with whom he impulsively engages in a passionate encounter before realizing Levi is also en route to Edmund’s family home. Why are the Clarks able to support a stranger in their home while turning their back on their eldest son?

In keeping with The Howland Company’s history of vibrant, award-winning acting ensembles, PRODIGAL will feature a mix of Toronto’s most exciting emerging actors, alongside veterans of Canadian theatre. The Clark family will be played by Dan Mousseau (Soulpepper’s The Seagull, Innocence Lost, CBC’s Strays, Workin’ Moms) as Edmund Clark, with Howland’s Hallie Seline (Howland’s Three Sisters, Casimir and Caroline, The Wolves, Showtime’s Fellow Travelers) and Cameron Laurie (Blyth Festival’s The Drawer Boy, Howland’s Three Sisters, Casimir and Caroline, Punk Rock) as siblings Edmund, Violet, and Henry, with Rick Roberts (NAC’s Copenhagen, NBC’s Transplant, CBC’s Fortunate Son, Soulpepper’s Waiting for Godot, Animal Farm) taking on the role of patriarch Rowan Clark, alongside Nancy Palk (Soulpepper’s August Osage County and Founding Company Member, Amazon’s Reacher, Keely and Du, Rogue) as matriarch Marilyn Clark.

The Howland Company welcomes back past ensemble actors Shauna Thompson (Howland’s Three Sisters, Peggy Baker Dance Project’s Beautiful Renegades, Crow’s Orphans for the Czar, Shaw’s The Devil’s Desciple) as Simone Côle, Michael Ayres (Howland’s Casimir and Caroline, GCTC’s Bang Bang, In Association/Crow’s What I Call Her, Amazon Prime’s The Boys, Out TV’s Sugar Highs) as her brother Levi Côle, and Veronica Hortiguela (Stratford’s Little Women, Every Little Nookie, Howland’s Casimir and Caroline, Cue6 Productions’ Dry Land) as Sadie, along with actors Meghan Swaby (Neptune/b current’s Controlled Damage, Nightwood/Sulong Theatre’s Calpurnia, Obsidian’s Venus’ Daughter) who will be taking on the role of Pauline and Jeff Yung (Outside the March/Factory’s Trojan Girls…, 6 Man Collective’s Monday Nights, YPT’s Antigone: 方, CBC’s Coroner, HBO Max’s Titans) as Quentin.
