Toronto: “Salome” inspires a new film from Atom Egoyan

Wednesday, February 8, 2023

Filming is set to begin next week in Toronto on Seven Veils, a new feature film from acclaimed filmmaker Atom Egoyan (Chloe, The Sweet Hereafter, Remember) and Rhombus Media, starring Amanda Seyfried (The Dropout, Mank, Les Misérables). Seyfried plays Jeanine, an earnest theatre director, who has been given the daunting task of remounting her former mentor’s most famous work, the opera Salome by Richard Strauss.

“I first produced Salome for the Canadian Opera Company almost 30 years ago and have been haunted by its themes,” says Egoyan. “This is a project I’ve been dreaming about for years and it’s such a thrill to be reunited with Amanda after the amazing experience we had together making Chloe.”

Egoyan first directed Salome for the Canadian Opera Company in 1996 and has since returned at the helm of later revivals, including the current production on-stage at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts through February 24, 2023.

“I’ve written this entire feature film around a production of Salome,” continues Egoyan. “This production is at the root of it all.”

Seven Veils is a Rhombus Media and Ego Film Arts production, produced with the participation of Telefilm Canada in association with Cinetic Media, IPR.VC, XYZ Films and the Canadian Opera Company.
