Toronto: Torquil Campbell’s “True Crime” returns to Crow’s Theatre May 1-7

Wednesday, February 22, 2023

Crow’s Theatre is thrilled to welcome the return of rocker and provocateur Torquil Campbell (STARS) with TRUE CRIME, his show-stopping stage debut which originally premiered in Streetcar Crowsnest’s inaugural season.

First chronicled in Vanity Fair’s “The Man in the Rockefeller Suit” in 2008, TRUE CRIME is the story of real world con man, the notorious Clark Rockefeller who successfully posed as a scion of the famous dynasty for well over a decade. Torquil Campbell wants to try him on for size. What does it mean for an excellent fabulator to embody an excellent fabulator?

In his play, Torquil takes a deep dive into the bizarre real-life story behind notorious German conman Christian Gerhartsreiter for a mind-twisting encounter with an artist obsessed with faking it! Don't miss this “brilliant piece of auto-fiction." (Toronto Star)

Since premiering in 2017, TRUE CRIME has toured across Canada including Montreal, Saskatoon, Vancouver, Banff, and Calgary, and throughout Ontario including a second stop at Crow’s Theatre, Prince Edward County, Brampton, and Stratford.

“Its questioning of the porous boundaries of truth and fiction resonates strongly in our era of alternative facts, and in that it feels particularly well timed. “A funny, engaging raconteur.” NNNN NOW Magazine

TRUE CRIME runs for one week only, May 1-7, 2023.
