THE ASSEMBLY THEATREʼs live action comic book reading series COMIC BOOKS LIVE!!! returns Friday April 7 2023 with a special one-night only (and thanks to Covid, 2-years delayed) book launch and dramatic reading of graphic novel BETTER PLACE by local creators Duane Murray and Shawn Daley.

In association with Top Shelf Productions, the beloved Parkdale home of independent performance, The Assembly Theatre are proud to present a one-night only book launch and dramatic reading of BETTER PLACE by local Toronto talent Duane Murray and Shawn Daley.

BETTER PLACE is a heartfelt and powerful graphic novel to be enjoyed by readers of all kinds. It tells the story of a young boy named Dylan who, after hearing his grandfather has gone to a “better place”, sets off on a grand adventure to find him dressed as his favourite comic book character. This debut graphic novel from Toronto locals Duane Murray and Shawn Daley, is a celebration of vintage comic book imagination and a roadmap to reconnecting with the things that really matter.

The COMIC BOOKS LIVE!!! event will be hosted by Assembly Theatre Co-AD and all around comic fan-boy LUIS FERNANDES (Therac 25, Unit 102 ; Tough Jews, Dora Award Nomination Outstanding Ensemble). The intimate dramatic reading will feature an all-star cast including JENNY RAVEN (Canadian Screen Award Nominee) and JOSH PEACE (The Boys; Tallboyz) and will be followed by a live talk back with the creators and a book signing.

Audience members are encouraged to buy a copy of BETTER PLACE to bring to the event in order to read along with the live performance. A copy of the graphic novel can be purchased for a discounted price of $20 along with the tickets at www.theassemblytheatre.com. Copies of the graphic novel will also be sold in person at the event for the regular retail price of $25. As well, original art from the book will be available for viewing in the theatre lobby.
