Toronto: The Canadian Opera Company announces its free concert series for May

The Free Concert Series in the Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre, Presented by TD Bank Group, is a unique opportunity to experience diverse artistic programming in what has become one of Toronto’s most exciting cultural hubs. Four inspiring series offer concerts, dance performances, and engaging presentations that feature up-and-coming young artists as well as established international stars. All performances are FREE to the public.

The COC’s Showcase Series: Asian Heritage Month highlights and shares the beauty of music, cultural identity, language, and supports an understanding of the diverse identities and experiences within the vast array of Asian communities. The month-long series takes place in the Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre from 12 -1 p.m. All events are FREE but will require a ticket. Additional resources will be made available following certain sessions.

Haneum, a Korean fusion band, embark on a musical journey that weaves traditional Korean melodies with western instruments. Each musician's unique sound reflects their personal journey to the group, as they share their stories. The performance culminates in an ensemble that illustrates five different elements uniting as one, bridging the gap between traditional and modern eras.

Off-Spring Live

Iran is a land rich with many ethnicities and styles of folk music. A sample of powerful and dramatic Azeri tunes, strong and everlasting Kurdish melodies, mesmerizing music of the North, and rich songs of the South offers a taste in songs that have been around for centuries. Some original pieces that are deeply rooted in these old tunes but have been reshaped by our individual journeys, interpretations, and music style. May our music be a homage to our fight for “Women, Life, Freedom.”

Parsi-Canadian Meher Pavri, Iranian/South Indian-Canadian Tahirih Vejdani and South Indian-Canadian Suba Sankaran, and Dylan Bell join musical forces to honour South Asian history and culture through the sharing of personal stories and songs relevant to their artistic lives in Canada. The performance spans centuries and styles of music including Bollywood, musical theatre, pop, opera, and original works.
