Toronto: Crow’s Theatre presents “X (DIX)” by Côté Danse June 14-18

Tuesday, May 9, 2023

Crow’s Theatre presents the Toronto premiere of Côté Danse’s X (DIX) with choreography by Guillaume Côté. The last stop of a spring tour across Quebec, five exquisite performers share the minimalist set stage of X (DIX), journeying far but always desiring to return home. The surging and sculptural sounds of experimental band Son Lux are amplified by the complex choreography.

X (DIX), performed by Natasha Poon Woo, Martha Hart, Willem Sadler, Kelly Shaw, and Evan Webb, explore the myth of Odysseus through the notion of the ‘inner compass’ and the idea that ‘home’ may be a state of mind. X (DIX) was conceived during the pandemic—a transformative time when travellers were summoned home, and when the very concept of home gained new importance.

“The piece is very powerful and shows an evolution of Guillaume Côté’s style as a choreographer.” - Chroniques de danse

Informed by his classical ballet vocabulary, Guillaume Côté’s choreography contours space with resonant geometries and fervent human connections. Contemporary lines and forms with a sleek edge and refined athleticism give his work a bracing quality.

Principal Dancer and Choreographic Associate at The National Ballet of Canada (NBOC), Guillaume Côté, “one of the finest male dancers in the world” (The London Times), is respected internationally for his outstanding musicality, technique, and dramatic interpretation. He has danced most of the major classical roles with the NBOC and has had several lead roles created on him. In 2013, he was appointed Choreographic Associate at the NBOC and, since 2014, he has been Artistic Director of the Festival des Arts de Saint-Sauveur in Québec.

Côté Danse is committed to taking dance beyond the traditional studio and venue settings. In addition to the collaborative, open, and inclusive approach to creating new work, Côté Danse develops unique outreach initiatives to make dance accessible to all with group classes, workshops, pre-show chats, post-show discussions, information sessions, and intimate performance experiences.

From June 20-25, following the presentation of X (DIX), Crow’s Theatre in association with Côté Danse will present FLIGHT, a developmental residency to democratize dance, reveal the creative process, and rebuild the dance community.

With investigation and exploration in mind, choreographers Guillaume Côté, Sid Ryan Eilers, and Hanna Kiel; will have opportunity to work and collaborate with Côté Danse artists Martha Hart, Willem Sadler, Kelly Shaw, Evan Webb, Natasha Poon Woo as well as dancers Miyeko Ferguson, Jessica Germano and Kevin Lau.

Throughout the week, members of the public and dance community are invited to attend morning dance classes with the artists in residence as well as attend open rehearsals and a free public presentation on Sunday, June 25 at 3pm in the Guloien Theatre. Full schedule of events and dance class registration to come.
