Thursday, September 28, 2023

VideoCabaret in association with Crow’s Theatre, is proud to announce (EVERYONE I LOVE HAS) A TERRIBLE FATE (BEFALL THEM) by Cliff Cardinal has been extended prior to opening night! This highly anticipated World Premiere will now run October 10-November 4, 2023 at the Deanne Taylor Theatre.

Cliff Cardinal and Karin Randoja are back collaborating for a third time on A Terrible Fate, which reveals a dark comedy about life, death, and what terribleness lives in between. Cardinal deftly performs multiple characters in this provocative and profound one-man-show, with Randoja’s darkly humorous twist on what it means to be human.

Cliff Cardinal is an associate artist at VideoCabaret, where he premiered Too Good to Be True, “a captivating tale that solidifies Cardinal as one of the most talented and intriguing writers in the country” (NOW Magazine). He was named a Canadian Cultural Icon in 2022 (The Globe and Mail) for William Shakespeare’s As You Like It, A Radical Retelling by Cliff Cardinal. The show was produced by Crow’s Theatre and was recently presented by Mirvish Productions as The Land Acknowledgement, or As You Like It.

For over 30 years Karin Randoja has specialized in creating and directing original devised performances, including A Field Guide to Fevers and Curses, Huff, Cliff Cardinal’s CBC Special, This is the Point, Gertrude and Alice, Jacinto, Brotherhood: The Hiphopera, Breakfast and Clean Irene and Dirty Maxine. Randoja is a celebrated founding member of Primus Theatre and The Independent Aunties.

(Everyone I Love Has) A Terrible Fate (Befall Them) by Cliff Cardinal, co-produced by Aaron Rothermund and Layne Coleman, officially launches VideoCabaret’s ambitious new programming at Busy Street under the guidance of its new Artistic Producer and General Director, Aaron Rothermund.

VideoCabaret is one of Canada’s most inventive, prolific and honoured theatre companies. The founding playwrights, Michael Hollingsworth and Deanne Taylor, have written many enduring works and, with the company’s celebrated designers and actors, created unique styles of staging for plays, multi-media cabarets, opera, and masquerade. Founded in 1976, VideoCabaret has built a strong following for Hollingworth’s history plays, a collection of darkly comedic Canadian history tellings titled “History of the Village of the Small Huts.” From the legendary Cameron House, to Stratford, to Soulpepper, VideoCab has supported artists in the development of new work, while continuing to present the history classics. Now in its own new home in Toronto’s east end, the company continues to present both new and established works, building on the success that has awarded this company over twenty-three Dora Mavor Moore Awards.
