St. Catharines: Tickts are now on sale for the Fostered Playwrights Festival
Thursday, March 14, 2024
Next up at the Foster Festival – the Fostered Playwrights Festival
In 2023 we initiated our Playwrights development program with a call out for new Canadian plays and was met with a resounding 72 submissions. From that number we selected three new scripts, each with its own clear voice, and have been working with playwrights Jody Stevens (NS), Camille Pavlenko (AB) and Steve Ross (ON) in the final stage of their process.
April 5-7 public readings of each will be presented at Cave Spring Vineyard, Beamsville, by professional actors followed by a Q&A with each of the playwrights. I know each of you and your organizations have an interest in new Canadian works and their development and would encourage you to come out for an exclusive look (listen) to these fantastic plays:
• Time and Tide by Jody Stevens
"Time and Tide" explores the pull and push of love, and the challenge of finding your place with and without family, through the keen lens of Newfoundland humour.
• Go For Gold, Audrey Pham! by Camile Pavlenko
Going for Gold at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, all that stands between Audrey Pham and the podium is her mother. A story about the weight of competition, family, and the unlikeliest of friends.
• Mechanically Inclined by Steve Ross
Shakespeare isn’t your typical fare for the amateur, but when Abby gets her chance to direct A Midsummer Night’s Dream with a cast of community misfits, she discovers more drama outside the rehearsal hall than in it. A hilarious look at how theatre can bring purpose, meaning and connection to even the most motley of crews.
