Toronto: Coal Mine Theatre extends “Hedda Gabler” to June 2

Sunday, April 21, 2024

Due to unprecedented demand, we're extending our run of Liisa Repo-Martell's adaptation of HEDDA GABLER, directed by Moya O'Connell.

After selling out its initial run in record-breaking time, Coal Mine Theatre's production of HEDDA GABLER will now run until June 2, 2024.

"Our audience's level of excitement for this show makes us giddy, and we want to make sure as many people as possible can see it," says Ted Dykstra, Chief Engineer of Coal Mine Theatre. "Given the incredible team presenting it this should be no surprise, but we take nothing for granted, and are always grateful that what we are presenting is meaningful and something that people clearly want to see and experience."

Hedda Gabler is a play written by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen. The world premiere was staged on 31 January 1891 at the Residenztheatre in Munich. Ibsen himself was in attendance, although he remained back-stage. The play has been canonized as a masterpiece within the genres of literary realism. Hedda Gabler dramatizes the experiences of the title character, Hedda, the daughter of a general, who is trapped in a marriage and a house that she does not want. Overall, the title character of Hedda Gabler is considered one of the great dramatic roles in theater. The year following its publication, the play received negative feedback and reviews. Hedda Gabler has been described as a female role on par with Shakespeare’s Hamlet.
