We are ecstatic to bring you Toronto’s first festival dedicated to celebrating opera, musical theatre, and Canadian artists and works to our Toronto audiences. Toronto doesn’t have a professional opera summer festival, so we decided to change that by making our own! We can’t wait to showcase incredible homegrown talent while training the next generation of artists with our Portfolio Artist Internship Program, in partnership with Opera McGill.

This year’s festival is centred around the theme of loss, and we open with Come Closer - a brand new Canadian chamber opera by Canadian composer Ryan Trew and librettist Rachel Krehm, with poetry by the late Elizabeth Krehm. Come Closer is a chamber opera that takes an emotional look at the grief of losing a sister, based on the personal experiences of Rachel Krehm, who lost her sister Elizabeth to addiction. The music is nostalgic, evocative and dynamic, but most importantly it deepens the characters and their journey.

Come Closer

June 13-21, 2025

Factory Theatre

The cast of Come Closer is Rachel Krehm (Big Sister) and Jacqueline Woodley (Little Sister), with conductor Evan Mitchell, Music Director of the Kingston Symphony, and stage director and dramaturg, Amanda Smith, Artistic Director of FAWN Chamber Creative. At the piano is Trevor Chartrand who is joined by Allene Chomyn on violin and Rebecca Morton on cello. We’re excited to welcome back production designer Shannon Lea Doyle and lighting designer Noah Feaver. We have been working away on designing the visual world for Come Closer and it is looking to be magical, filled with light and darkness to heighten the arresting story of Come Closer. We are so happy that returning to Opera 5 is production manager, Patrick Lynn and stage manager, Tamara Vuckovic. These two amazing people will be working so hard behind the scenes to make sure that everything comes together. And we are also very lucky to be working with production dramaturg Graham Cozzubbo, and Portfolio Artist Interns Assistant Stage Director Maddalena Ohrbach and Assistant Stage Manager Emma Yee. The rest of the fabulous Portfolio Artist Intern group have assignments on the show as well.

Elegies: A Song Cycle

Up next is Elegies: A Song Cycle by Willian Finn. That’s right, we’re doing our first-ever musical!! This intimate piece pays tribute to Finn’s departed friends, the Tony Award-winning composer of Falsettos and A New Brain. Elegies will be directed by Opera 5’s Artistic Director Jessica Derventzis, and music directed by Nate Ben-Horin with stage manager, M Fera. The cast includes six of our incredible Portfolio Artist Interns: Kyle Briscoe, Jayden Burrows, Kate Fogg, Brenna McFarland, MacKenzie Sechi, Emma Yee, along with intern assistant director, Len Crino. This show will be a perfect pair with Come Closer, so you will have to make sure to grab tickets for both shows. Opera 5’s brilliant festival design team will also join us for Elegies with production design by Shannon Lea Doyle and lighting design by Noah Feaver, along with production manager, Patrick Lynn.
