Wednesday, February 5, 2025
Show One Productions today announced the Canadian premiere of TANGO AFTER DARK, an electrifying spectacle of authentic Argentinian tango created by internationally acclaimed tango superstars and World Tango Champions Germán Cornejo and Gisela Galeassi. With ten world-class dancers, two extraordinary singers from Argentina and a live band of seven musicians, TANGO AFTER DARK brings the sultry and sophisticated art of tango to life through the intoxicating compositions of Astor Piazzolla. After multiple sold-out performances across the globe, TANGO AFTER DARK will premiere at Toronto’s Winter Garden Theatre (189 Yonge St.) from March 14-16, 2025.
Led by Cornejo, affectionately dubbed “King of Tango” by The Mail on Sunday and a favorite of Jennifer Lopez, TANGO AFTER DARK transports audiences to Buenos Aires with a spectacular performance that is both traditional and breathtakingly modern. With glamorous costumes, exceptional dance and enchanting music, the production has captivated audiences around the world, revealing tango in its purest and most electrifying form. As Argentina's most popular dance, world-renowned for its seductive powers, this mesmerizing show combines the sensuous side of tango with the rawness and quick-fire precision of the movement.
“We have had the pleasure of touring Tango Fire across Canada for many years to sold-out audiences, earning acclaim from both critics and fans,” said Svetlana Dvoretsky, Founder and President of Show One Productions. “Now, we are very excited to bring the Canadian premiere of TANGO AFTER DARK, a captivating new production by Germán Cornejo and Gisela Galeassi. Toronto audiences have a deep appreciation for these incredible artists, and we are eager to host their latest work. TANGO AFTER DARK masterfully captures the vibrant energy of Buenos Aires nightlife, brought to life through Cornejo’s stunning choreography."
As the ultimate tango experience, TANGO AFTER DARK celebrates Piazzolla’s revolutionary impact on the genre. His music, which transformed tango in the 1960s through his innovative “Nuevo Tango” style, resonates with themes of the artform—its mystery, fervor and allure. The live band, featuring seven musicians and two vocalists, transports the audience into the vibrant nightlight of Buenos Aires, infusing each movement with passion and precision.
For decades, Cornejo’s unique choreography and his troupe’s extraordinary talent have redefined tango for the 21st century, attracting praise from critics worldwide. Notable admirers of Cornejo’s work include Simon Cowell, Marc Anthony and Mel B., who have all been captivated by his brilliant artistry. With each sold-out performance, Cornejo and his ensemble continue to showcase tango’s traditional elegance while pushing the boundaries of this expressive art form.
Germán Cornejo’s exceptional talent gained further recognition on Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony’s reality TV show, Q' Viva: The Chosen, where he emerged as a winning finalist. This achievement paved the way for his participation in Q’ Viva Live, a live production starring Lopez and Anthony, directed by the renowned Jamie King. Later in 2012, Cornejo reunited with Lopez as a special guest artist during her Dance Again World Tour.
