Toronto: Coal Mine Theatre presents the Canadian premiere of “Job” April 20-May 11

Thursday, March 20, 2025

Concluding their smash 10th anniversary season, Toronto’s beloved “Off-Off Broadview” stage - COAL MINE THEATRE – presents the hotly anticipated Canadian premiere of Max Wolf Friedlich’s explosive JOB, onstage April 20th to May 11th.

A tightly wound 80-minute roller-coaster ride, in JOB, an employee at the big tech company (you know the one), has been placed on leave after becoming the subject of a viral video. She arrives in the office of a crisis therapist determined to be reinstated to the job that gives her life meaning. A propulsive psychological thriller, JOB zooms in on two careerists of different generations, genders and political paradigms to examine what it means to be a citizen of the internet and our obligation to help the people who need it most.

The Canadian premiere production stars stage icon Diego Matamoros alongside Charlotte Dennis and will be directed by Canadian theatre veteran and multi–Dora Award-winner, David Ferry.

"I think JOB is the first play by a playwright under 30 that we have done at the COAL MINE,” comments Artistic Director Ted Dykstra. “I couldn't believe, when I read it, that its author was in his mid-twenties. It is an incredibly well-crafted and absolutely 'can't-put-it-down' read! But on reflection, only someone his age could so accurately represent the rift in understanding between his lead character's generation and that of the psychiatrist. It's also funny, delivers knock out punches to both sides, and is a helluva thriller on top of all that. Add legendary actor Diego Matamoros and Charlotte Dennis - who won this role with a stunning audition - and you have another can't miss show at the COAL MINE. I am ever grateful in MY job!

JOB first made its off-Broadway premiere at the Soho Playhouse on September 6, 2023, where it enjoyed a sold-out run and several extensions. On January 19, 2024, the production returned to New York for a limited run at the Connelly Theatre, which eventually transferred to Broadway opening at the Hayes Theater on July 30, 2024. The production starred acclaimed American film, television, and stage actor Peter Friedman alongside rising star Sydney Lemmon, granddaughter of famed actor Jack Lemmon. Lemmon was relatively unknown when she was cast in the play, and her role in JOB has had a defining impact on her career.

Joining Ferry on the creative team behind the Canadian premiere production are set designer Nick Blais, costume designer Ellie Koffman, lighting designer Wesley Babcock and sound designer Michael Wanless.

JOB is on stage at the COAL MINE THEATRE April 20 – May 11 with performances Tuesday – Saturday at 7:30pm and Sundays at 2:00pm. Tickets are available now at www.coalminetheatre.com.
