Toronto: “The Runner” returns to Toronto April 26-May 4

Thursday, April 10, 2025

The Runner, written by and starring Christopher Morris and directed by Daniel Brooks, premiered in Toronto at Theatre Passe Muraille in 2018 to critical acclaim. It was the winner of three Dora Awards in 2019: Outstanding Production, Outstanding New Play and Outstanding Direction (Independent Theatre Division).

The Harold Green Jewish Theatre Company and Koffler Arts are excited to be working with Christopher and Human Cargo to bring the production back to Toronto this spring, 2025.

Human Cargo is dedicated to the creation of theatre that explores the extremes of the human condition and inspires audiences to re-evaluate their personal and global perspectives. They collaborate with theatre artists and companies in Canada and around the world to create their work, which is developed over long periods of time, in the countries and communities where their productions are set.

The Runner, a one-man play, follows a Z.A.K.A. worker named Jacob. Z.A.K.A is an Orthodox Jewish volunteer force in Israel that immediately responds to terror attacks, disasters or accidents. In the play, Jacob, a character based on a real-life Z.A.K.A worker, must make a split-second decision as he grapples with the political and moral fallout of saving a woman’s life. “I’m interested in what happens to us when we are pushed to our spiritual, moral, and emotional limits because it’s at these times we see the best, and worst, of who we are,” says Morris.
