Toronto: Théâtre français de Toronto presents “Cispersonnages en quête d’auteurice” April 24-27

Wednesday, April 9, 2025

Théâtre français de Toronto is proud to co-present Joe Jack et John’s Cispersonnages en quête d'auteurice with Théâtre Passe Muraille. The show will run from April 24 to 27, 2025 at Théâtre Passe Muraille and marks the very first collaboration between these two Toronto theatrical institutions.

SYNOPSIS: Five neurodivergent performers gather in a rehearsal studio to kick off a new creative process. But when they realize they can’t put on the unicorn show they originally envisioned—because, well, they’re not unicorns—they each start pitching ideas to break through the creative block. Torn between their artistic ambitions and a tangle of ethical dilemmas, they soon realize they’re treading on a minefield, with their creative freedom feeling more and more restricted. So who can help them out of this mess? An actor? A magical unicorn? Or maybe… a little bit of both?

All performances take place in a relaxed atmosphere: you are free to enter and exit as you wish, the lighting remains on, and sound effects are kept at a comfortable volume for everyone.

A troupe of professional performers meet in the rehearsal studio to continue work on a new play. Each of them comes up with scenarios and ideas to break the creative deadlock in which the group finds itself. Caught between their dramatic desires and their many ethical principles, their playing field seems full of mines and their artistic freedom rather limited.

Influenced by debates on political correctness and the identity struggles that have infiltrated the arts, Catherine Bourgeois offers us an original comedy, loosely based on Pirandello’s famous play Six personnages en quête d’auteur. With neurodivergent artists, she explores themes such as cultural appropriation, cancel culture and freedom of expression in an open and straightforward way.
