Toronto: Théâtre français de Toronto presents “Michel(le)” May 21-24
Thursday, May 8, 2025
As children, Joey and Michel loved to dress up and put on shows for their family and friends. It would’ve been otherwise difficult for them to show their true colours in the working- class Quebec of the 60s and 70s where they grew up. Seeking an escape, the two brothers each went their separate ways. One became a liberated actor in Vancouver, the other shone on the Montreal drag scene before transitioning to the woman she always wanted to be. But can we blossom freely when our identity tragically clashes with the roles society imposes on us?
This first autobiographical solo by Joey Lespérance paints a contrasting portrait of a marginal, courageous, and tumultuous journey. By bringing to life the lost dream of his “froeur” Michel(le), this unique and vibrant statement from the Vancouver artist honours the memory of unique destinies, too often forgotten.
