Steel Magnolias runs at Port Hope's Capitol Theatre July 18-August 3.

Women are as delicate as magnolias but as tough as steel. This classic play tells the story of Truvy’s in-home beauty parlor and the women who frequent it. As the women confront their own unique challenges, they rely on their friendship to get them through some of the hardships of life: health, family, religion, and relationships.

Original playwright Robert Harling created Steel Magnolias as a tribute to his sister’s journey to motherhood and experience living with diabetes.

After a successful off-Broadway run, the rights to the play were purchased and the story was transformed into the iconic 1989 film of the same name.

Although Dolly Parton played beauty shop owner Truvy in the film, Harling wrote the role of for his friend Margo Martindale. Martindale originated the role in its off-Broadway run paving the way for many actresses including Capitol Theatre's Raquel Duffy.
