Toronto: Martial arts meets dance in “Wing Chun Dance Drama” on sale now

Thursday, September 4, 2025

Before Bruce Lee, there was Ip Man. Wing Chun Dance Drama tells the true story of martial artist and prestigious Grandmaster Ip Man and his influence on the legendary art of Wing Chun, from its 300 year old origins in China to its explosion across the rest of the world, and his most famous student Bruce Lee.

Wing Chun Dance Drama has broken Chinese box office records and features a unique aesthetic that fuses dance with various Chinese martial arts, including Wing Chun, Tai Chi, Bagua Zhang, Baji Quan and Praying Mantis. It has been hailed by critics worldwide for its brilliant fight scenes, outstanding cast and intricate design elements.

The highly acclaimed, multi-award-winning dance drama features two gripping, interwoven tales about the relentless pursuit of dreams: the first, set in 1950s Hong Kong, traces the journey of Ip Man, also known as Yip Man. It chronicles the Wing Chun grandmaster’s struggles and triumphs as he champions Chinese martial arts and the philosophy that true strength lies in stopping fights, not starting them. The second narrative follows Dachun, a lighting technician with a 1990s film crew, as they work to capture Ip Man’s story, preserving his indomitable spirit for generations to come.

Created in 2022 by the acclaimed Shenzhen Opera and Dance Theatre, Wing Chun Dance Drama is produced by the Shenzhen International Cultural Exchange Association and Shenzhen Municipal Bureau of Culture, Radio, Television, Tourism and Sports. It features Chang Hongji, principal dancer of the Shenzhen Opera and Dance Theatre and gold medal winner at the 2024 Seoul International Dance Competition, as Ip Man.

This legendary production is a visually stunning fusion of martial arts and dance that is not to be missed.
