Wednesday, January 28, 2026
Tarragon Theatre’s Artistic Director, Mike Payette and Executive Director Lisa Li, alongside Green Light Arts’ Artistic Director, Matt White, are pleased to announce the North American Premiere of The Neighbours, A Green Light Arts Production in Association with Tarragon Theatre. The thriller, written by Governor General’s Award-winner Nicolas Billon has its North American debut on Tarragon’s Extraspace from February 24 - March 15, 2026, opening February 26.
In Billon’s new thriller, The Neighbours, we meet Denise and Simon - a couple who believe that good neighbours don’t pry. But when they learn that the man next door has been harbouring a terrible secret for over a decade, they are forced to come to terms with what they may have overlooked - or worse, chosen not to see.
As the pair deal with the jarring reality of discovering a sinister secret lurking right next door, they confront uncomfortable questions about complicity, indifference and the choices we make to preserve a sense of normalcy.
How does humanity come together as the horrors of the world abound around them? Can they? We’ll find out…
“Green Light Arts has made an incredible impact within Kitchener/Waterloo, and has made ripples throughout Toronto with its unique aesthetic and commitment to engaging storytelling. We are delighted to welcome our audiences to experience their work, in the North American Premiere of this compelling piece by Nicolas Billon,” notes Tarragon's Artistic Director Mike Payette.
Payette continues, “Nicolas is a theatrical force who has created some of the most exceptionally memorable contemporary works of our time. The Neighbours is a fast-paced mystery that gives the audience the magnifying glass, to discover what secrets lie among us under the backdrop of a seemingly pleasant neighbourhood that feels both familiar and disturbingly quiet.”
“After working across - and outside - Toronto for several years, this feels a lot like coming home. I'm thrilled to have The Neighbours be a part of Tarragon’s season and for us to introduce it to Toronto audiences," notes show director and Green Light Arts’ Artistic Director Matt White.
White continues, “Nicolas Billon has an uncanny ability to create worlds that draw you in and spark conversation, and this is no exception. We can’t wait for Tarragon audiences to engage in conversation about complicity and about how people can get trapped by their biases, their fears, and their curated stories about themselves and others."
The Neighbours is written by Governor General’s Award-winner Nicholas Billon (Iceland, Butcher). With performances by Ordena Stephens-Thompson (Three Sisters/Soulpepper/Obsidian Theatre, Da kink in my hair), Tony Nappo (The Summoned/Tarragon, Strays/CBC) and Richard Tse (Iron Road/Tapestry Music Theatre, Ga Ting/ARTillary Collective). The Neighbours is directed by Green Light Arts’ Artistic Director Matt White (Izad Etemadi: Let Me Explain/Green Light Arts, Will You Be My Friend/Green Light Arts).
